When you move to another country, especially later in life you quickly learn the difference between information that sounds helpful and information that actually is. Over time, I’ve learned to rely on a small circle of resources that are clear, trustworthy, and grounded in real life, not forums full of conflicting opinions. These are not flashy. They do not promise shortcuts. What they offer instead is clarity and that, I’ve learned, is priceless. Here are 5 resources for expats I genuinely trust and return to while living in France.

1. Service-Public.Fr (English Version)
The official French Government website, clearly explained
This is hands down the most reliable resource I’ve found it’s offered by the French Government available in English, free to use, and thoughtfully organized. It covers a wide range of topics, from residency, and healthcare to driver’s licenses, real estate and everyday administrative questions.
2. SNCF Connect- (French Railway Company) Train travel made understandable
France’s train system is excellent; it can be overwhelming at first. SNCF Connect has helped understand routes, discounts and travel options especially the senior card which offers significant savings and makes travel around France much more accessible.
On the SNCF site you can:
- Check train schedules
- Buy tickets
- Manage reservations
- See discount options
https://www.sncf.com (France)
https://sncf-voyageurs.com ( English info)
3. Local Mairie (City Hall) – Resources for Expats
This may surprise some people but your local Mairie is often one of your best allies. Whether it’s information about the community, events, residency paperwork, or local services. I’ve found the staff to be so patient, helpful, and genuinely invested in residents no matter where you are from. They offer a listing of cultural events, activities, even offering language classes. Every city has a Marie.
4. France Services Centers– One place many answers
France Service centers are designed to simplify life by bringing multiple public services together in one location. They can help with pensions, healthcare, taxes, and administrative questions often in an easier way than navigating a variety of systems alone.
These centers reflect something I deeply appreciate here, the idea that systems should support people, not exhaust them.
What France Services offer:
-help with declaration paperwork, applications(pensions, health coverage, housing and ID cards)
-digital assistance for online procedures
-support in person close to where you live (there are thousands of centers across France)
Finding one near you:
You can search by your postal code or town on the main site above

5. Word of Mouth from People Who Live Here
Some of the best information I’ve received has come from casual conversations at a cafe, or at the salon, or from my colleagues at work.
A Final Thought – Resources for Expats
Living in France has taught me that life becomes easier when you stop chasing all the information and start trusting a few solid sources. At times, it is hard enough to just navigate the many new daily experiences alone. I have found that these resources don’t rush you, talk down to you, or assume you should already know everything.
Thanks for being here,
