Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures at any Age

In a world where anything can be delivered to your doorstep with a clique of a button within a few hours, there’s something quietly radical about creating something with your own two hands. A  philosophy rooted in “olden times” was when people didn’t just consume, they crafted, built, and tended to the things that mattered. And even now, with instant gratification only a click away, that old wisdom still rings true. Our authentic desires to make, shape, and create are essential aspects to a joyful, and  anchored life.  This is all about finding joy in simple pleasures.

Whether it’s cooking a home cooked meal, arranging flowers, weaving a scarf, tending a garden, building a bird house, or crafting your own canoe or piece of furniture. Creativity pulls us back into the present moment. These simple passions become acts of grounding in a world that spins fast.

Creating Something New – Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures

They also help us create something we deeply need today. A peaceful sanctuary at home. A space that nourishes us, re-centers us, and invites us to breathe again. When we nurture our environment, we nurture ourselves. When we tend to ourselves, we naturally become more present. Feeling at peace and nourished will have a ripple effect which we can pass on to others.

I was inspired to write this piece after watching two dear friends who were in their own midlife chapters, picked up weaving “just to try it.” What started as a simple hobby turned into a craft they’ve now both mastered. Creating beautiful intricate pieces that carry their joy. The happiness and steady sense of accomplishment it brings them is unmistakable. It’s a reminder that sometimes the smallest spark, followed with curiosity can become a quiet source of purpose and pride. It’s all about finding joy in simple pleasures.

I ask you, What is one small interest, curiosity, or forgotten passion you’ve been quietly wanting to explore? What is one tiny step you could take toward it this week?

Thanks for being here,

Hi Soraya! A lovely description of the creative process and its resulting joy! As a life long artist, I believe the desire and talent to create is part of me, something from inside and not imposed or defined by the outside world. Skills and interests can change and develop for all of us throughout life, however inner creative passion is always present to vaying degrees. Although my mid life chapter of weaving was actually a return to the process I learned and practiced in my twenties, weaving is one of the ways I express the artist that I am. It is intereseting that your “two dear friends” were discussing this very same creative process topic recently, it seems the three of us are in sync wherever we are!
Wishing you all the joy of the season and through the pleasure of your writing!
