Arriving in Como revealed yet another facet of Italy’s beauty. Nestled near the Italian Alps about 30 miles north of Milan, the town sits bedside Lake Como. A glacial lake surrounded by mountains that rise dramatically from the water. Visiting Lake Como was a top place on our Italy bucket list.
Compared to Venice, Como felt quieter and more relaxed. The town was walkable, welcoming and dog friendly making it easy to explore. There was an ease to being there, a sense that time moved a little more slowly.
We stayed in an Airbnb just outside of town, getting there was an adventure of its own. The road narrowed to what felt like the exact width of the car, and arriving at night without knowing the curves, which were actually more like true hairpins rather than “curves”. Required a tremendous amount of focus and courage to drive. I was grateful for my daughter’s steady confidence behind the wheel.

Exploring Como Without the Crowds: Visiting Lake Como
Seeing Lake Como in person was everything I had hoped for and more. Visiting during a quieter season made it especially enjoyable. Without the usual crowds, the lake felt expansive and calm, inviting rather than overwhelming.
Wide avenues lined the water, dotted with cafes and restaurants offering outdoor seating. The evening we arrived, we found a simple pizza place packed with locals with their dogs sitting under the tables. The next morning, we found a charming breakfast café attached to a hotel which became our final stop before heading home.

This adventure was the perfect mix of reconnecting and sharing something special. It felt easy, meaningful, and reminded me how much those small shared moments really matter.
Thanks for being here,
-Soraya
