Welcome back to part two of bridging the generation gap.
Millennials – Bridging the Generation Gap
Millennial’s or otherwise known as Generation Y (1981- 1996). They are the first generation to truly live online, texting is a common form of communication, ordering food with a tap on the phone, dating with a swipe, and instant shopping. Most millennials hit adulthood during the 2008 recession, which delayed many milestones like buying a home or starting a family. Having a strong moral compass, they want their purchases and careers to mean something.
Their Social Influence: TV shows: Spongebob Squarepants, Friends, Family Guy, Boy Meets World and Rugrats.
World Events: The Millenials experienced significant political and societal change, influencing their views on government, social issues and foreign policy. Key events include, September 11 Terrorist Attacks, the Iraq War, and the economic recession to name a few.
Family life: Millennials grew up in general with dual income households or single parent families. Families were smaller in general. They are accustomed to constant access to information and social media which has influenced their family dynamics and communication patterns.
Foods: New Foods introduced during the 2000-2010 began to reflect a shift in dietary awareness in addition to convenience, e.g. smoothies, sliders (focusing more on smaller portions), the love for bacon escalated finding its way into milkshakes and ice cream, avocado toast became a mainstream at brunch and coconut products (e.g. water, and other products) gained popularity in the health and fitness industry.
Inventions: The inventions during this time were significant particularly in the technology and social platforms. Such as Social Media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. Millennials were the first generation to grow up with smart phones and smart watches.

Gen Z
1997-2012) they are the true digital natives as their reality has always been with constant connection through electronics. They are considered the most diverse generation, generating a heightened awareness of social justice, inclusivity and the environment. Their Social influence: Gen Z’ers are significantly reshaping social norms, consumer behavior and even the business landscape due to their digital fluency, social consciousness and value – driven approach. They tend to be very involved in social and political issues, particularly climate change, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights.

Generation Alpha – Bridging the Generation Gap
Generation Alpha (2013-present) is just stepping into the world. Many have been using screens before they can write their names. They will be growing up with AI in their classrooms.
Here’s where the cycles of life come into view. As an older person you start to see the rhythm, how every generation thinks they are blazing a new trail, yet in some ways they are also repeating the same dance. Questioning what came before them, shaping something fresh, and handing it over to the next generation. The Boomer’s, The Gen X’ers, The Millenials, the Gen Z’ers and the up and coming Alpha’s, it’s all a remix of hope and action reframed for a new moment, for their time.
When we stop competing and start collaborating, the magic happens. When we step back and see the bigger picture, it’s clear that each generation, past present and still to come is not just shaping the future, but stitching together a shared story that grows stronger, brighter and more beautiful with every new thread.

Thanks for being here,

One response to “Bridging the Generation Gap: The Millennials, Gen Z, and Alphas ”
Interesting and helpul summary! Here are my thoughts as inspired by your post. This sentence in your last paragraph really struck me, “When we stop competing and start collaborating, the magic happens.” I think this is true between, and also within, generations. There is also the tendency for generations to completely dismiss generations before them as if they haven’t lived through the same stages of life! And also for older generations to dig their heels in regarding “what used to be.” Social media has added pressure and judgment as well as social interaction and helpful information. It has also contributed to the younger generations being less likely to look to the generations before them as mentors. Information isn’t always the same as lived experience though. I believe that having self-respect is key to the forward thinking which helps us to really hear others. Hopefully we can continue to create the magic you refer to of embracing multiple generations!
