Exploring Ireland’s Burren by Bike: A Memorable Mother-Daughter Trip

Once the sunlight peeked through the window shades we knew it was time to rise and shine for our packed day of adventure ahead. First up, exploring Ireland’s Burren by Bike through the picturesque landscapes of Kilcorney and Magheraweeleen followed by a breathtaking sunset visit to the iconic Cliffs of Moher. We grabbed a quick breakfast laced up our shoes and headed out of the door, excitement buzzing in the air. The Burren is an amazing national park in County Clare that is known for all the unique flora and fauna. If you’d like to read more about this special place, and it’s limestone-loving nature, look here.

A Quiet Morning in Clarinbridge

We arrived in the small town where we would start our bike ride. We parked in front of the local restaurant and gift shop. At the front desk, we mentioned that we were there for the bike tour. Since, we had some time to spare we decided to grab breakfast first. The restaurant was quaint and so cozy with just four tables and a friendly atmosphere. As the departure time approached we stepped outside and saw a van with bike rentals advertised parked just across the street. That certainly had to be our tour guide!

Crossing the road, we were greeted by a kind yet no-nonsense woman who introduced herself as our guide. We were the only ones on the tour that morning. Oh oh! She fitted us to our bikes and insisted we take a practice run to show her our skills. Thankfully, she seemed pleased with our abilities and explained that the ride would be dictated by our pace, with several planned stops for her to share a bit of the local history.

Exploring Ireland’s Burren By Bike

The day was clear, absolutely no rain in sight yet again! Locals have been telling us how rare it was to have such beautiful weather this early in the season. We felt incredibly lucky! Off we went, pedaling our electric bikes, which made negotiating the hills a breeze. The road was narrow and scenic, winding through cow pastures and quaint little towns. Our guide shared wonderful bits of history along the way, making each stop absolutely more enriching.

At one point she showed us a house that had been in the same family for ten generations! The old stone fences, reminiscent of a bygone era, lined the property and stretched into the distance. We paused to see young calves with their mothers, and visited a 19th century church and cemetery.  Sheep grazed lazily,  unbothered by our passing with an occasional farmhouse dotting the landscape.

A Quick Pit Stop

After a couple of hours of pedaling our tour guide brought us to a little café at a local farmhouse. The smell of fresh scones and brewed coffee was irresistible. They had the best baked goods! The place was very busy and was filled with friendly conversation, it certainly was a gathering spot for the community. The break was perfect, giving us just enough rest before hopping back on our bikes to finish the final stretch.

The bike tour was more than just a ride, it was a glimpse into the history and traditions of the Irish people, woven through landscapes that seemed untouched by time. The landscapes of rolling hills, clusters of wildflowers lend itself to many stops to snap photos. Being able to experience this tour allowed one to see the beauty of the Irish countryside.
