Living in Annecy, I had the chance to attend the Carnival Festival for the first time,. It is the last weekend of February,. The carnival is a celebration that quietly marks the end of winter and hints that spring is not far behind. The Annecy Venetian Carnival fitting for a city often called the Venice of the Alps is rooted in a centuries-old tradition. Beginning in Venice people would disguise themselves behind elaborate masks and costumes, celebrating anonymously. While the tradition has evolved over time, the feeling remains the same: festive, welcoming, and just a little bit magical.
History of the Annecy Venetian Carnival
Annecy adopted this tradition in 1996, and truly, there could not be a more perfect setting. The canals winding through the old town, the pastel buildings, and the backdrop of Lac d’Annecy create a natural stage for the event. For one weekend, the city feels like it has stepped into another era.
Around 500 participants from across Europe come to take part. There is a parade on Saturday. What I enjoyed most was simply walking through the old town, along the lake, and in Parc de l’Europe,. Many costumed figures appear unexpectedly standing along the canals, posing under bridges, or slowly strolling through the streets.

A Magical Festival
What makes this festival so special is how open and friendly it feels. The participants welcome photos, selfies, and conversations. Families gather, children run around in their own costumes or with freshly painted faces, and everyone seems to share in the same sense of wonder.
The weather this year was beautiful, which made it even more enjoyable to linger and take it all in.
If you ever have the chance to visit Annecy at the end of February, I would highly recommend experiencing this festival. It is one of those weekends where the city reminds you how much joy can be found simply in showing up, walking slowly, and allowing yourself to be part of something timeless.
Thanks for being here,
